We live in an era when every part of our daily lives is related to advanced technology in one way or another. This advanced technology has affected work methods and mechanisms across the board, and the libraries sector is not immune to this effect.
Today, many libraries increasingly rely on technology to manage their collections and provide services, which makes it imperative for professionals working in the sector to continuously update their skills in order to work effectively and progress in their careers.
In this context, consultant and library expert Marshall Breeding addresses a number of important topics and strategies that library professionals should consider during their ongoing professional development.
In order to raise awareness of these skills and strategies, Naseej Academy has organized an online workshop entitled “Essential Technology Skills for the Modern Librarian”. The webinar will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 4:00–5:00 p.m., Makkah time (UTC+3).
Marshall Breeding is the creator and editor of Library Technology Guides and the libraries.org online directory of libraries on the web. His monthly column, “Systems Librarian”, appears in Computers in Libraries. He is the editor of Smart Libraries Newsletter, published by the American Library Association (ALA). Mr. Breeding has edited or authored eight books, including Cloud Computing for Libraries, published in 2012 by Neal-Schuman, now part of ALA TechSource. He has also held a variety of positions with Vanderbilt University Libraries in Nashville, TN between 1985 and 2012, including as Director for Innovative Technologies and Research, and as Executive Director for the Vanderbilt Television News Archive.
The main objectives of the webinar are to provide participants with awareness of current technologies and trends, practical information on current library technologies, strategies for ongoing professional development, and a perspective on incorporating technology into organizational planning.
Webinar participants will gain increased awareness of:
- Current trends in consumer and business technology: cloud computing, big data, socially enabled applications, mobile apps, data-driven business applications, predictive analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI).
