Naseej Academy Launches Webinar on The “Smart” in Smarter Libraries

We all want smarter libraries. But what makes a library dynamic, effective and “smarter”? And which partners, technologies and practices should we engage in creating such a library? The answers to these questions – and many more – are explored in this fascinating webinar organized by Naseej Academy.

Entitled “The ‘Smart’ in Smarter Libraries”, the webinar will be held on October 31, 2018, 4:00–5:00 p.m., Makkah time (UTC+3).

The webinar is designed principally for academic libraries’ personnel staff, University libraries’ heads and directors, and researchers in the Library Information Science LIS field.

Moderator of the webinar is Professor Clara M. Chu, Director and Mortenson Distinguished Professor at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and President-Elect, 2018–2019 of Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T).

Clara M. Chu is an expert who has had long experience in:
  • examining appropriate solutions in the delivery of equitable and relevant library services in culturally diverse and dynamic libraries
  • introducing emerging technologies to connect and empower communities locally and worldwide
  • studying the information needs of culturally diverse communities in a globalized and technological society.

Professor Chu will explore what it means to develop a smarter library using an inclusive framework that is applicable to different types of libraries, with varied levels of resources and located anywhere in the world.

The webinar engages the notion of a “smarter” library that builds on aspects of a smart library, such as being flexible, efficient, resource-friendly, sustainable and socially inclusive, but which isn’t necessarily entirely reliant on new technologies. Smart libraries are being contemplated in the development of smart cities. Here, smarter libraries will be considered as anchors of their communities.

The key objectives of the webinar are to understand different ways to consider the notion of “smart” in smarter libraries, to learn about smart technologies designed for use in libraries, to consider practices and partners in developing smarter libraries, and to be mindful of social traits such as inclusivity and equity in designing smarter libraries.
