The digital age presents new challenges to fundamental copyright doctrines that are the legal cornerstones of library services. Copyright is among the most hotly contested issues in the legal and legislative world. Legal principles and technological capabilities are constantly being challenged, and every outcome can directly affect the future of libraries. In this context, Naseej Academy is organizing a webinar entitled “Copyright for Academic Librarians in the Digital Age”. The webinar will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, 4:00–5:00 p.m., Makkah time (UTC+3).
The webinar is designed principally for academic librarians and staff members of academic libraries.
The webinar will be led by Dr. Sara Benson, an Assistant Professor and Copyright Librarian at the University of Illinois in the United States.
Dr. Benson is an expert with long experience in law librarianship and copyright law.
She is currently ACRL Co-Chair, Copyright Discussion Group; ARL-University Intellectual Property Officers Steering Group Chair; and Elected Senate Executive Committee Member.
In addition, she has edited or authored numerous publications on library management and copyright.
The webinar will address copyright issues faced by academic librarians and staff on a daily basis. It will incorporate case studies of copyright scenarios that might occur at an academic library, and highlight solutions to those issues.
By the end of the webinar, participants will have a good knowledge of the basic copyright rules (and exceptions for libraries) as set out in the Berne Convention. They will be able to differentiate between “copyright” and “intellectual property”; identify useful solutions to copyright issues that may arise in an academic library setting in the digital age; and work within the copyright rules to help patrons to access library materials, both printed and digital.
