The use of big data in education is a fairly new trend that has been expedited by 2020’s global lockdown. The volume of data produced globally is phenomenal, and its growth looks set to continue. The education sector is a key element of global economies. As such, it is in an optimal position to leverage the massive flow of big data to enrich learning objectives and obtain top-quality instructional design.
Educational designers must therefore analyze the big data resulting from students’ interactions with e-courses in order to provide educational designs that meet each learner’s specific digital character and behavior. In this context, Naseej Academy organized an online webinar entitled “Use of Big Data in Instructional Design”, held on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., Makkah local time (GMT+3).
Moderated by Prof. Dr. Khaled Mostafa Malek, Professor of Information Technology, Helwan University, the webinar addressed a number of big data-related topics and concepts, including the importance of big data in the design of e-courses, mechanisms for determining the sources and types of big data, and the educational implications of recent studies on big data. The webinar also reviewed the potential of instructional design to develop, renew, and enhance learning and teaching, and offered recommendations for its use in educational institutions.
Webinar Key Themes:
- Concept of big data and educational design.
- Types of data and their sources in e-learning management systems.
- Academic research on information and educational technology, including the relation of data flows from e-learning management systems to educational concepts.
- Recommendations for use of big data in the design of e-courses.
The webinar concluded with a lively discussion between the participants – who included instructors and educational designers of e-courses in tertiary and pre-tertiary education – and the webinar moderator. The participants showed great interest in big data’s applications in terms of curriculum and assessment design, classroom planning, evaluation design, curriculum and instructional design alignment, adaptive technology and pedagogical design. Prof. Khaled stressed the need for educational institutions to focus on using big data wisely to ensure it leads the way to better learning.
