Marshall Breeding Leads “Effective Management of Big Data and Research Data within Academic Libraries” Workshop

Marshall Breeding, an expert on libraries and automation technology, will lead a workshop titled “Effective Management of Big Data and Research Data within Academic Libraries” in Muscat, Oman, on March 6–8, 2018. Organized by Naseej Academy in collaboration with the Special Libraries Association–Arabian Gulf Chapter (SLA–AGC), the workshop is part of the 24th Annual Conference & Exhibition of the SLA–AGC, to be held March 4–5, 2018, in Muscat’s Grand Millennium hotel.

The workshop is well timed in this era of “Big data”, when researchers and knowledge specialists are tasked with seeking out, managing and organizing a vast amount of data.
Librarians and other information professionals can be a rich resource for researchers facing challenges. They are ideally placed to share their extensive knowledge management experience, to provide qualitative support for large data management within the framework of research work, and to make the outputs available to the community.

The workshop will cover the following:
  • big data and research data
  • qualifications and skills required for dealing with big data and research data
  •  how to manage big data and research data.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to develop strategies for their library or information center related to big data, assess whether big data methodologies can be implemented in library service, select tools and technologies for creating big data repositories, and perform analysis to extract trends and inform operational decision making.
