There has been a great deal of debate about whether virtual reality is the “Next Big Event”. Yet, there has been very little discussion of the legal considerations related to this technology, and of the implications of its increasing spread for owners of the associated intellectual property.
In this vein, in line with the strategic collaboration between Naseej Academy and the Education Sector of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, Naseej Academy organized an online webinar entitled “Impact of Copyright and Intellectual Property on Library Services in the Virtual Age”, which was held on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. The webinar featured Dr. Ali Al-Bar, Vice-Dean of e-Learning, and Eng. M. bin Mansour, Learning Resources Manager, Education Sector of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, who highly appreciated this fruitful collaboration between Naseej Academy and the Education Sector of the Royal Commission in Jubail and Yanbu.
The webinar was moderated by Association of College & Research Libraries member (ACRL) Sara Benson, J.D., LL.M., MSLIS, Copyright Librarian, Interim Head of the Scholarly Commons and an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. Ms. Benson’s moderation of the webinar reflected her high-caliber and rich knowledge, and generated a high degree of engagement with and participation from attendees.
The webinar was aimed at librarians, information specialists, and people interested in the library and information field. Participants gained a great deal of key information on and knowledge of copyrights and intellectual property laws, their impact on libraries, the use of licenses granted to these libraries, and users’ access to information resources. In addition, they obtained a good understanding of copyright exceptions given to libraries. The webinar also elaborated on the impact of plagiarism and copyright on the daily work of both librarians and library patrons.
