Scott Leeb, a global expert in knowledge management and technical consulting solutions, will lead a workshop titled “Big Data for Strategic Planning and Decision Making in Academic Libraries” in Muscat, Oman, on March 6–8, 2018. Organized by the Naseej Academy in collaboration with the Special Libraries Association–Arabian Gulf Chapter (SLA–AGC), the workshop is part of the 24th Annual Conference & Exhibition of the SLA–AGC, to be held March 4–5, 2018, in Muscat’s Grand Millennium hotel.
The workshop will serve to meet the growing need for effective ways to deal with large data and advanced analytics management. Many studies indicate that when enterprises embed data management and analysis into every level of their operations, they can achieve increased operating and quality gains . Big data has become an integral part of strategic management. Thus, it has become essential for decision makers in academic institutions to know how to translate the raw numbers and complex reports generated into content they can use to make evidence-based executive decisions.
The workshop will cover the following:
- Who is interested in big data? Who benefits the most from big data that is managed efficiently and effectively?
- What are the challenges of using big data at the senior level in academic libraries?
- How can a roadmap help in extracting big knowledge from big data?
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to recognize the implications of big data for their organization, appreciate how it can assist their organization, and develop a roadmap for addressing key big data challenges.

About Scott Leeb
Scott Leeb is a senior consultant with Iknow, a leading international consulting firm specializing in knowledge management. He has responsibility for the Big Data and Analytics practice, where his clients have included US and foreign governments. Scott’s experience stems from his leading the knowledge management/business intelligence functions of four Fortune 500 companies and a leading international philanthropic organization. His areas of expertise include data visualization, statistical and quantitative analysis, and data mining.
Scott has spoken in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North and South America on a wide range of topics, including big data, business intelligence, market intelligence, and strategic and knowledge management. He began his career as a senior intelligence analyst for the US Army, specializing in East Asian political–military affairs. Scott holds MAs from the Australian National University and Columbia University, a BA from Yale University and a language certificate from Beijing University.
