 “Strategic Planning in Academic Libraries “Workshop Praised by Participants

Naseej Academy (www.naseejacademy.org) successfully conducted a workshop entitled “Strategic Planning in Academic Libraries” on February 7–8, 2018 at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The workshop was led by Ms. Jo Webb, a specialist and published writer in strategic planning and change management in libraries. Ms. Webb is a former Director of De Montfort University Library in Leicester, UK. 
The two-day workshop was attended by deans and directors of academic and university libraries, and by administrators involved in the strategic planning process in university libraries in the GCC. Among the institutions represented were King Saud University, Hail University and Jeddah University; the University of Bahrain and the Learning Resource Center at Sohar University in the Sultanate of Oman; and, from the United Arab Emirates, the Department of Education and Knowledge – Abu Dhabi Education Council UAE, the Canadian University Library in Dubai and the Higher Colleges of Technology.
Topics covered during the workshop included strategic planning concepts within integrated library management systems, the key components of a strategic plan, the key tools in strategic planning, SWOT analysis, PESTLE analysis, and SMART objectives. Measurement of performance and standards, and barriers to strategic planning, were among other topics discussed that are vital in ensuring successful implementation of strategic planning in academic libraries.

The workshop also included interactive exercises for participants that focused on the impact of strategic planning on areas such as institutional performance, institutional identity, and applications of information services.
As part of the cultural program that accompanied the workshop, participants enjoyed a tour of the Louvre Museum.

The workshop participants praised the 2-day event, and described the workshop as “well-structured, insightful and rich in content”, and further commented on the information provided being “excellent”, and the sessions “well organized”, according to post workshop feedback. 
Most of the attendees mentioned that they would recommend the workshop to their colleagues, and expressed a desire to participate in future workshops organized by Naseej Academy.

Prof. Dr. Abdallah Metwally, Supervisor of Naseej Academy, applauded the active and effective participation of the attendees. He asserted the Academy’s commitment and contribution to supporting the capabilities of senior leaders in academic libraries through its capacity-building training programs and other activities aimed at issuing professional certificates accredited by renowned international institutions. Foremost among these is the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), the leading professional body for librarians, information specialists and knowledge managers in the United Kingdom. CILIP provides a number of products and services, including accreditation for learning providers, advertising space for recruiters and library suppliers, and onsite training for employers.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants received the joint Naseej Academy and CILIP certificates.
