 Naseej Academy Conducts Two Successful Workshops on the Internet of Things (IoT) in Libraries

Abu Dhabi, UAE, March 5–7, 2019

In the presence of Eng. Abdulla Al Turaifi, Executive Vice President of Naseej, and Prof. Dr. Abdallah Hussein Metwally, Naseej Academy General Supervisor, the Naseej Academy concluded two workshops on the Internet of Things (IoT) and libraries.

 The workshops were organized by Naseej Academy in cooperation with the Special Libraries Association ​– Arabian Gulf Chapter (SLA–AGC), alongside the 25th SLA–AGC Annual Conference, held March 5–7, 2019 at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Abu Dhabi, UAE. 

The first workshop, which was presented in Arabic under the title "Security and Privacy Aspects of the Internet of Things (IoT) for Libraries", included several topics related to security and privacy issues in libraries, IoT and its accompanying technologies, investment in and use of IoT by libraries, and the role and use of brain–computer interface technology in providing library services for people with special needs.

Dr. Khaled Mohamed Fargoun, Professor of Educational Technology at Helwan University, Egypt, moderated the workshop.

The workshop was attended by several directors and representatives of information institutions and libraries in the Arab world, among them the Ministry of Presidential Affairs – UAE, Ministry of Education, Kuwait, National Library-Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, and Lebanese University.

 

The second workshop, "Internet of Things (IoT) for Libraries", presented in English, was moderated by Prof. Clara M. Chu, Director of the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs. The workshop addressed the concept of the Internet in general, and how it is used in libraries in particular, the interactive workshop focused on providing examples of the use of IoT in libraries, privacy and security issues, smart speakers, voice computing, and automation using IFTTT.

 

The workshop was attended by many information specialists in the Arab world, among them United Arab Emirates University, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Sultan Qaboos University, Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management, and Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB).


At the end of the workshops, Eng. Abdulla Al Turaifi, Executive Vice President of Naseej and Prof. Dr. Abdallah Hussein Metwally, Naseej Academy General Supervisor, reiterated Naseej Academy's interest in organizing workshops, training courses and specialized lectures that help develop the capabilities and performance of staff, and improve the work environment of libraries and information institutions.
